Baarle, Netherlands
“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” – John Muir
Project Description
The Gifted Tree’s planting project is in Baarle in the Netherlands. This project has its roots in the cross-border province of North Brabant in the Netherlands as an effort of reforestation and afforestation. Afforestation is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees in an area where there was no previous tree cover. The region has a relatively low afforestation rate which confirms the general trend in the Netherlands where land is predominantly used for agriculture. Nevertheless, no less than five deciduous and coniferous species will complement this diversification and fallow afforestation project. The species to be planted include European larch, European oak, sycamore maple, chestnut and Nordmann pine. Thanks to the diversity of the species planted, this forest in the making will be even more resistant to future climatic hazards. Moreover, the afforestation will enrich these former agricultural soils while welcoming the biodiversity specific to each of the planted forest species.
