Monchique, Portugal
“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” – John Muir
Project Description
The Gifted Tree’s planting project is in Monchique, Portugal (the Algarve region), in the southern most area of the country. Portugal has experienced severe forest fires in the last several years that have traumatized the inhabitants, the landscape and the economy of this region. The ambitious planting project we are participating in hopes to start restoring the thousands of acres that have been destroyed. This tree planting project will make it possible to restore degraded ecosystems in the absence of natural regeneration, to strengthen the reception of biodiversity, and to make the tree groves more stable thanks in particular to a diversity of locally adapted species. The species be planted in this project include cork oak, fag oak, poplar, eucalyptus and white willow. Finally, forest fruit trees accompany these species, notably strawberry.
