Project Description

This Gift Tree Planting Project is in the area around Cariboo, British Columbia, Canada. The planting project aims to restore degraded land due to the severe Hanceville forest fire in 2017 which ravaged more than 590,000 acres of forest including many Douglas Fir trees. Unfortunately, these Douglas Firs have a difficult time regenerating naturally. By planting this, and other diverse species, the forest is being regenerated quicker than if left to nature. The replanting also brings back the natural beauty of the landscape.

Wildfire events, such as the Hanceville fire, commonly cause soil instability and erosion, due to the removal of the top litter layer. A severe fire can also physically alter soil properties making them repel water, which can further exasperate run off and soil erosion. Reforesting this fire impacted area promotes soil stabilization via roots, reducing erosion, and improving critical watersheds for local communities. Additionally, the restoration project in Cariboo allows the complex ecosystem to improve thus supporting a broad range of life forms in the area including moose.

In an effort to maximize species diversity, your gift tree can be one of the following species: douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, hybrid spruce, ponderosa pine, and trembling aspen. The species diversity included is designed to create a more climate-resistant forest and achieve long-term stability.

Once connected to the map, feel free to zoom in and out to get a feel of the general planting
area as well as its location in British Columbia, Canada, the United States, and the world. The link is best viewed on a
personal computer as opposed to a cell phone. Please understand that this is the general area of the tree planting. Your
tree would be planted among thousands of other gift trees and there is no plaque designating the gift
tree and visiting the tree is unfortunately not possible.
Know that the tree planting project is making a monumental difference for the earth and
