Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Maryland
“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” – John Muir
Project Description
This Gifted Tree Planting Project is along the Chesapeake Bay watershed in Garrett, Allegany, and Washington Counties, Maryland.
The overall goal of the project is, through the planting of trees, to improve the water quality of the stream water flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. The species included in the planting project are wide and varied and include Beech, Aspen, Oak, Willow, Spruce, and Pine.
Tree root systems play an amazing filtering role in the soil and these new plantings will help reduce the levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, and sediment that exist in the Chesapeake Bay. These are problems that affect many natural areas in the face of intensive agricultural practices and increasing development. The reforestation effort will also aid in erosion control, flood mitigation and storm water management, and help promote population rebounds of vulnerable and threatened wildlife species such as the Golden-winged and Cerulean warblers.
